Taif Hope and Empowerment at the Olive Tree Centre
This is a two-part story
Taif Sabri, a young man who came to Jordan with his family after fleeing persecution in Iraq. Taif’s journey, from feeling isolated to becoming a leader who now empowers others, is a testament to the strength and resilience fostered within the Olive Tree Centres. His story highlights the ripple effect of hope that your support helps to create.
Five years ago, Taif arrived in Jordan with his wife, young daughter, mother, and brother, Anwar. They fled their home in Iraq after his father was persecuted and killed because of his Christian faith. Settling in the Gardens area, Taif's family faced the immense challenges of starting anew in an unfamiliar land. Isolated and lonely, they struggled to find connection and stability.
However, everything began to change when Taif learned about the Olive Tree Centre. Seeking out the centre, he quickly became involved in the various classes and courses offered, showing great dedication and commitment. It was during this time that one of the centre's staff members asked him a simple but profound question: “What could you offer as a youth activity?”
Taif’s response was a reflection of his entrepreneurial spirit: he introduced the idea of a men’s barbershop. With the guidance and support of the centre, Taif enrolled in a training course to learn the skills needed to start his own project. The Olive Tree Centre provided him with all the necessary tools and equipment to launch his barbershop, and with the help of his brother, Anwar, they began their new venture.
At first, the project was slow. Only three people attended each week, but Taif and Anwar were undeterred. They continued working hard and building relationships with their customers. Word of mouth soon spread, and within a month, 20 people were visiting the barbershop each week.
Today, Taif is not only managing the growing demand but is also training others in the community to help with the project, allowing him to serve even more people. We love his resourcefulness in using balloons to familiarise other young men in how to shape and cut hair.
Taif’s story is one of resilience, hope, and empowerment. From a young man who came to Jordan seeking refuge to a leader who now serves and empowers others, Taif exemplifies the power of community and the life-changing opportunities provided through Mosaic’s Olive Tree Centre.
Thank you for being a part of Taif’s journey and for helping make stories like his possible. Your support continues to bring hope and transformation to so many.
