Raising a Bakery from the ashes

During the ISIS invasion and occupation in 2014 the Nineveh Plains homes and businesses were destroyed. Mosaic Middle East has supported Frandi's artisan bakery in the village of Teleskof to be restored, giving hope and employment for six young people, who may once again provide for their families and produce fresh bread for the wider community.

The bakery, named Al-Mahaba specialises in Lebanese bread for the village and surrounding area.

THE PROJECT

The bakery has been raised from the ashes of the old bakery and has new mixing and baking equipment. It will provide stable employment for 6 bakers and once established will employ more. Their income will  enable them to support their families and will help to generate more local wealth.

The wider community now has access to freshly baked bread that sources its ingredients from local farmers. This is another visual sign that the village is on the ‘up’ and should in turn attract other Iraqis to return and resettle.

GOALS

To create 6 new jobs and to rebuild the old bakery

To enable the local community to access fresh bread that has been produced using locally sourced ingredients.

To ensure returning families have access to food and can see signs of local investment and opportunity
